Chinese New Years in my family is always a family oriented occasion. Our family (particularly my parents) really enjoy putting on a good meal for this occasion. We always have many dishes to eat, everyone a specialty of the Chinese New year season. The house is always full of food that only find during Chinese New years. And it's one standard occasion that I always see my parents work together in the kitchen making the whole meal. That's cause the meal is so big it needs the two of them.
However, this year I kind of feel bad. I've been talking to some of my friends and also thinknig about others that I know within the city and how some of them either their family is not in Toronto/GTA, or perhaps they do not celebrate as much as my own family. I also felt the same way during the Christmas time too. I feel sorry for them, because some of the biggest family oriented occasions, they are without theirs. I often times think, I wonder if my parents would mind if I invited some people for dinner. However, I always chicken out when it comes to this. I don't know why, but perhaps I'm just not used to having friends over or anything like that. Over the course of my life, I don't think I've had many friends over for meals, and perhaps I should look into this more this year. This makes me realize that when I do get my own place, really need to share what I have with others.
I was noticing something today, so I was at the supermarket with my mom and we were buying fish. Then one of the workers was pushing this wet cart to haul fish, and he thrw it right at me when he tried to push some other cart out of the way. I yelled at him for a second, but I really wanted to continue yelling at him. But here is what I've noticed, and I can't pinpoint the one moment I made the switch but I seriously think it happened when I started going to NYC. I am meaner, and I am much more prone to be on the offensive than let it go. I don't know if it's the city, but you gotta be confient/powerful in that city to survive, otherwise you'll be taken advantage of, you gotta be on top of the world. And I think I brought this back to Toronto with me. When I walk across streets, I jay walk with confidence knowing exactly how to maneuver myself to not get hit. I don't take crap when I know it's not my fault. And as much of a food critic as I was before I went to NYC, i've become even a bigger snob of food after I came back. NYC just spoils you with the good food that if it doesn't match up, it just leaves you disappointed.
On that note, man the food in Maryland really sucks. And I constantly compare how bad this is to what I get in NYC. What makes it worse is the company cafeteria pails in comparison to the company cafeteria I got in NYC. The one in NYC I got fresh made pasta in front of me, risotto, homemade pizza, got like roast beef, turkey, etc. The one hear, it seriously sucks, the chicken ceasar salad looks appetizing compared to the other food. And it's more expensive. Then when I leave work and try to find dinner, it's like which fast food do I eat this time? I am seriuosly contemplating the all salad dinner, or all subway dinner. I can only eat fried food for so long.
I went to watch Hostel last night, and oh man was it gruesome and scary. One thing, if you ever plan to go to Europe and maybe stay in a hostel, don't watch this movie. Because you may not ever want to go after seeing this. I am surprised more people have not heard of it, but it's a Quentin tarantino film, though I must say not as publicized. It was played at the Toronto Fim Festival and it's in theatres now. I won't spoil it, nor bother summing up the storyline, but it was just sick. If you are into this type, go watch it then cause I did like it nevertheless.
I am staying in Washington DC next weekend, I'll post up pictures of what I saw there. In the meantime, get a look of this airport in Baltimore. This is the international section, it's like completely empty. Cause the only flight that sems to take off around the time I leave is my flight, 30 people in all.
