The Game Show Network

In the midst of my boredom, one good thing has come out of this. I have a new found appreciation for the oldies shows. Since we have this digital box to watch all the great Chinese shows, I have also flipped through this broad selection of shows to watch The Game Show Network.

There were some really good shows back then such as “The Matching Game” where all they have to do is complete a sentence with one word and have a few people match it. Another game, I think it’s called “Card Sharks” is when you have a deck of cards, start with a card, and you have to either guess whether the next card is higher or lower. And you have to guess 5 consecutive. One of my favourites is one called “Whammie” where they got this buzzer thingy, and they just hit it while this board with a light goes wild and which ever it stops on, they get. They are all more interesting to watch than to describe.

But whatever happened to these game shows? Did they even ever make it is my question. How come these shows cannot last as long as “The Price is Right” which might I add is celebrating it’s 30th year on TV. Amazing isn’t it? Who knew Bob Barker could hold an audience that long? The Price is Right is amazing show, I love watching it. It’s like the classic game show, along with Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune. So what makes these game shows so successful whereas ones that are just starting like “The Weakest Link” and all it’s ripoffs like “Greed”.

I can tell you one difference. The Price is Right appeals to all those people at home in the daytime because it uses household products. Look at the population that is at home at 11AM? It’s those that are at home usually, the house-people (not wives, cause we all know men do it to right?). And those are the people that see these products the most which makes the attraction to the viewers. It’s not all about money, it’s about products, living rooms sets, cars, trips. Looking at The Weakest Link, Greed, it’s all about the money.

Another thing is The Weakest Link and Greed try to make a mockery of game shows. They use humour to appeal to their audience. But if you look at game shows that are one around their time slots like Jeopardy and Wheel of Furtune, you hardly ever see Alex Trebek or Pat Sajak laugh. Their shows are respectable shows that appeal to the working audience. They got this thinking type of show that is respectable. And winning is not the hardest thing, sure it requires some luck on the categories and words, but still is do-able.

With a show like The Weakest Link, my dad used to love watching that show when it just started, that English lady is hilarious, rude, but funny. But every time we watch it, all he can say is how it’s impossible to get $1 million dollars. Lady keeps on saying you won $___ out of a possible $_____ which is impossible he says. And if you think about it, it’s not impossible, but it’s very unlikely. Why? Cause you have to work as a group, and the group does not trust each other. Everyone wants money, and if they don’t BANK, then they lose it, cause we all know everytime they get somewhere, this really hard question comes along.

So what else is on the Digital Cable box? Charlie’s Angels. That is one good show. When I first started watching it, I could of sworn Farrah Fawcett was one that show, but I did not see her. Only when I watched Gilmore Girls the other day and Rory was saying they collected these Charlie’s Angels plates with their faces on it, she listed all them, and I found out there were more, after being replaced. I figured that was the case, but I could not be sure of it. So why do I like this show? I love shows where there is some sort of mystery to solve. I always loved watching Matlock, Andy Griffith is the best. Books by John Grisham, another one of those that I like. So this Charlie’s Angels show has just the right amount of deception and action with the sex part. Sure, from what they say, they got pretty girls. I can’t tell beneath those clothes man. But they don’t use sex to sell the show in my book, not with what’s on tv these days. So if anyone gets the chance to watch it, and they have the Digital cable box, it’s on showcase diva (that’s channel 146. I know, Showcase, but whatever, they still got some good shows like this one) weekdays at 12PM.

Another good show that was one before was Once a Thief I think the name was, A John Woo classic. This show was one for a while, then they stopped showing it. Too bad, I liked that show.
