Formal, Overrated
This is a continuation on the previous blog, and is inspired by a previous article in The Toronto Star a few days back.
So this blog is about High school formals/proms, and how overrated the whole event really is. First of all, I didn’t go to my High School formal, so I can’t say I can tell you what goes on there. But once can guess, to a very good estimation, and I was around when people plan it and stuff, so not like I don’t know nothing.
It’s the end of the school year, everyone preparing themselves for the big day. First of all too much money is spent on this day. Here is some High school kid, maybe earning minimum wage if even spending maybe thousands of dollars on this one day/night. There is the Limousine, the hotel room (maybe, for the night party), tickets (sometimes double price if you’re the guy, in some cases), tuxedo/dress, if you’re a girl, gotta spend that whole wad of cash no your hair. The list goes on.
So is this price too much to pay? Well, it’s one night in your lifetime. Everybody says “oh, but it’s a night you’ll remember for the rest of your lifetime”. I don’t think this is true, a few months of University and you won’t even remember what you did last June.
The date issue, you want to spend it with someone who you like (at least as a good friend), not just someone who will go with you. Why? Because first you want to have a good time. If it’s someone outside of your school, you want them to be able to mingle around, them not have a bad time, and for you to be able to go around and talk to other people as well. You don’t want to be forced to “babysit” your date all night, thus restricting you from doing other stuff. ‘Babysit’ is a harsh word, maybe more like you want this date to fit in, and so your not bound together all night. The last thing you want is to be forced to be with your date all night everywhere. This will cause you both to not have a great night, of course unless your “in love”, but I won’t get into that.
Now a lot of these things are generalities, it does not always happen (so nobody bite my head off), but in a lot of cases they do.
Funny term that is associated with those “in love” and what happens after graduating, going off to University. There is this term called the Thanksgiving “Turkey Dump”. Hehehehe. I like that term. This is when those who go off to University, still “in love” as they say. They come home for thanksgiving, first time to see each other again after they went to separate Universities. So they come home to dump their gf/bf’s. Thus, the Turkey (associated with Thanksgiving) and dump (dumping each other). I thought I’d mention that, cause I find it funny.
So back to this formal thing, you pay like ohhh, lt’s say $80 for a “night of fun”. That includes a dinner that is really not that great. The venue (not up to proportion a lot of times), and maybe one picture (if even). If you’re a guy, and you intend to bring the girl and pay for her tickets, that’s $160 in total. That goes for the girl paying the guy’s ticket as well (it happens).
Oh, a lot of people advertise it as a night so you can “see your friends for the last time”. That statement itself has some contradictions. First, if your going to see them last time, and you don’t care to keep in contact afterwards, it really does not matter. Now if you are to keep in contact, the chances of seeing each other again is more likely, thus the statement does not work. And the ‘friends’ part, well, if they are really friends, then you will make an effort to keep in touch. Otherwise, they are just acquaintances. So like seriously, those you really want to see again you will make an effort to keep in touch with. So it most likely will not be last time you see them. Everyone else, you’ll be lucky if you remember all their names come next year.
I really didn’t make many points I don’t think, but it’s a good topic to think about. Everyone think back to your formal/prom, do you think it was worth all the money you spent? If you did not spend any money (and neither did your parents), and you did go, then well, I have no comment for you.
Personally, I have no regrets for not going. For me, I graduated with the people in my grade (that would be grade 12 in my case) but I was closer with the people a year ahead of me. So I don’t think I would have had fun going to this formal anyways. So no regrets.
