Presumptions and Preconceptions
Let me share with you some of the things I’ve come across lately that have somewhat bothered me. These are the things that people automatically assume after hearing something. These presumptions bother me somewhat, and I too am guilty of some of them, however after experiencing them, I look out for them more.
First, anyone who regularly reads this blog will know I am unemployed. Now this is a topic that is sensitive to me, and has bothered me a lot as well. However, that bothers me more is say someone asks me “so what are you doing this summer?”, I have to tell them “nothing”, which is technically true. So the first thing I find people ask me after that is “Are you looking?” Now this is the response that bothers me. This response says to me that they don’t think I am looking. This tells me they think a) I’m lazy b) I don’t look c) If he’d only look, he could find one. I am kind of offended by these automatic presumptions. First, a) I am lazy, however that has not stopped me from looking. I have actually been searching for a job for a long long time. Some people ask, “Did you apply to …”, well, there are like so many companies, I cannot possibly cover every single company. And I don’t know if they’ve noticed, but the market is so bad right now. At least I try to convince myself that.
I know, this response can be also viewed as “Did you want to work this summer?” which could be looked as harmless, because some people don’t want to work. However, there are definitely still some who think of the first way. And this bothers me because they just think I don’t put the effort into finding one when the truth is far from that. Maybe I’m reading too much into one simple reply, but these are my thoughts. I hate that question now, (“what are you doing this summer”), for those of you who talk with me, you’ll notice I try to avoid the topic of summer, but it is hard to avoid, because what else is going on in a students life?
Second thing that bothers me is when let’s say I can’t come to something, people automatically assume I just don’t want to go. Now before I get into this, I know I am too guilty of doing this as well. So I might sounds like a hypocrite in a way by talking about this, but I honestly when I question how come people don’t come to ___, I usually have a general idea already. But I may also seem like I just sound like I think they don’t want to come, so to those of you out there, I am truly sorry, I will either be more direct (clear) next time, or not bring it up at all.
So this presumption happened to me on two different occasions off the top of my head yesterday. They were in response to different gatherings I would either usually go to, or would of gone. First response is I just don’t want to go at all. But the truth is I have something important I have to go to even more. It’s not debatable, there is something important I have to attend to more than other stuff. But I think this one is easy to get misconceptions about it. I mean like it’s hard to know everyone’s schedule, so when they don’t go to something, there may not be a good reason, or there may be a good reason. So I think this one is easily forgiveable.
I know for me I am always the one questioning, but I think I almost do it out of habit now. Which is bad. But I do understand when others have something important to attend to. I mean we’re technically all naïve about others until told. So for those who get my questions, please forgive me for being naïve.
Third, Mississauga is booneyville. This one really bothers me. Mississauga is like so close to Toronto. It’s like half hour drive to where I live which is like west Mississauga. But Torontonians in general are so naïve about where Mississauga is. Really, A LOT of people think it’s like hours away or something, and that we got cows in our backyards. That this is the under-developed city that has got nothing. So let me clarify for all those out there, Mississauga is like 6th largest city in Canada. Now this largest I think is with population. We have major developments everywhere. It has probably second largest mall in Canada. And if not second, then third. I don’t know how they calculate this, prob area, but closest ones are West Edmonton Mall, and Eaton Centre in downtown Toronto. The Square 1 mall has a major expansion and is huge. And let me tell you more, where I live, there is a Port Credit River, and this part of Mississauga has a lot of history. There were wars faught right here, from what I hear, there is a sunken ship right by the harbour near Port Credit River. We have ancient buildings that the settlers stayed in and everything. So not like some explorer from Toronto decided to walk west and found Mississauga.
Now this might seem like a whole lot of complaining, but I guess it some ways it is. If this has offended anyone in anyways, I am truly sorry, and please send me an e-mail with any comments. This is not meant to be poking sticks in peoples’ backs, just for me to vent some.
This is it for now, I had a couple more, but I can’t think at this hour, it’s ten minutes to 4AM. I got home late tonight, and now I’m staying up to write this even though I can’t publish it until morning cause right now I am not connected to internet, it was bad networking my sister did. But it suffices, so I’m content.
I can’t tell you any current events today, except:
- Lennox Lewis beat Mike Tyson 8th round KO
- Detroit pulls out win after 3rd overtime over Carolina
- TCBC Sanctuary lost in a hard fought battle with the SCBC Socs, score unknown
