What would Jesus wear

So I was kind of bored about an hour ago, so I decided to browse some anonymous blogs from blogger.com. What I found was kind of interesting, some guy in the States had linked off his page. (Check this out)

So this website is, let’s call it a cut-out of “What would Jesus Wear”. It’s got Jesus in briefs with clothing around him for people to cut out, colour, do whatever, and then place it on Jesus so one can see what Jesus would wear. First of all I found this disturbing because this is Jesus, it’s awkward seeing this I find. Secondly because there is this link off that page that has a bunch of submissions I guess and they all looks dumb. One has Jesus wearing Tribal Indian apparel. I find this a bit of a mockery of Jesus and I don’t like it very much.

However, there is a good message that I guess was the inspiration behind it.

The clothes we wear say a lot about our identity – how we see ourselves and how we want other people to see us. Where we buy our clothes and what brands we buy are significant, even if they don’t have visible logos.

If Jesus were on earth today, what clothing brands would he wear? Colour in the clothes. Then cut out all the pieces and dress Jesus by bending back the tags. WHAT WOULD JESUS WEAR?”

So this message is totally true, how we dress in today’s society tells a lot about who you are as a person. Sure, some may say we don’t want to judge others by their appearance or how they dress, but fact of the matter is we judge people all the time. And it’s just instinct, you see someone, you form some conclusions and get on with life.

Of course just because we make some conclusions at first glance, usually if there is ever a chance to verify our conclusions, they can change. I think with girls there are usually more opinions. This is because girls in general have more selection of clothes and different styles. Guys clothing looks the same every year, you will see things do not change much with guy’s clothing, it’s almost always the same. Colours change, styles do not.

But why do we care what others think? For myself, I used to get my share of “he dresses well” comments. One reason for this is because I have a sister to make sure I don’t go out and embarrass myself. But recently I’ve been on this splurge of not caring anymore. It costs too much and takes up too much time to care as much as I did. As long as I feel okay going out how I dress, I’m okay with it. Of course, I still try to dress decent, there are certain standards I must uphold when I go out. And this is not because I need to impress somebody/anybody, this is because in order for myself to feel good about myself, I need to maintain some certain standard. Before, many people would say I looked so dressed up, but it’s not my fault. The clothes I liked just looked a little more on the dressy side than the other side.

Why do brands matter? I think it’s a media thing making certain brands the “gods” of fashion. They set the standard and everyone else follows. And it just so happens the most popular brands have the most money, this can reproduce the expensive trends to something somewhat affordable and a bit different. And it just so happens those are the ones people like. Brand names are really not that important, but it just so happens those are the ones that look good. Those are the ones people like. It’s hard to shy away from brand names once you start buying them.

But for me, my take is that if you look at non-brand names, they are almost the same prices as say sub-brand-names let’s call them. Places like Mexx, Gap, Banana Republic all fit into this sub-brand-name category, and they are what I refer to above as Brand names (so everywhere above that I have brand names, is the same as this sub-brand-name). You buy a pair of pants for $70-$80, it’s the same everywhere. Unless you buy at say Wal-Mart, you won’t find something at a much cheaper price. Wal-Mart is great, however their quality and materials are far in comparison. And their styles are even worse. Of course say your general khaki pants, every guy wears them. It’s probably the same everywhere, whether at Wal-Mart or BR. But most people would rather have the BR brand than the Wal-Mart, because it’s Wal-Mart.

I don’t know why it seems places like Mexx, Gap and BR have nicer styles in my eyes, maybe I’ve grown accustomed to them. But I try not to buy anything from them at regular price, because the mark-up is outrageous, and for at least Gap, they always have sales a few weeks after. Other than discount-department stores, all other stores are priced around the same area. Even department stores like Bay and Sears are priced around same area as these sub-brand-name stores. So why not go for the sub-brand-name.

The reason I call them sub-brand-name is because there is this whole separate category of brand-name that is far more pricier than Gap. I won’t even talk about those ones.

So next time I go shopping, will I still shop at The Gap, BR, Mexx, probably. Like I said, once you start, it’s hard to go back.
