Bras On Their Faces

Where there are no masks, wear a bra. That phrase might not have meant much a few months back, but in light of the S.A.R.S. outbreak, it’s the big thing in southern Taiwan. Because of a shortage of surgical masks in Taipei, villagers are now sliding the chest protectors over their faces to shield themselves from the disease. One middle aged man explains the origin of the fad on cable TV. “I went to every pharmacy in the village and it's impossible to find a proper mask,” he said, his face partially covered by a dark red cup. “Somebody came up with this idea so I decided to give it a try.” There’s actually a small bra factory that’s producing the makeshift masks, and workers are cutting the colourful undergarments in two and sewing on additional straps. That factory may be the only place to get protection from severe acute respiratory syndrome, since face masks have been cleared from most store shelves - and for an unfortunate reason: S.A.R.S. infections have tripled in Taiwan in the past two weeks to 360 cases, the third highest in the world after China and Hong Kong. But look at it this way: now men can wear a bra on their face in public, and women have no reason to slap them for it.

I wouldn't be caught dead with a bra on my face. But it'd be funny to see. Maybe a little laughter amidst the serious times of SARS.
