Restaurant Review
Cuisine of India - This restaurant is located at North-East corner of McCowan and Hwy 7. If Indians are anything like Chinese, they may say that any Indian restaurant with the word "India" in it is not real Indian food, or no good (kinda like having "China" in it), Or the very least, should have some Indian name or something. Unless say for example, the "China" is used in the form of some description like "Great Wall of China", instead of "Taste of China" or something" But in any case, I'm Chinese, eating at an Indian restaurant, what do I know about how it's supposed to taste?
However, I have been to three other Indian restaurants (one of them is the Babur on the side), so I think I can be a fair judge of some aspects.
The first thing I notice is that this place is really dark, I could hardly even see my Palm it was so dark. It's very big, from what I hear, it used to be some steak house or something, I think it might be a little too big for it's purposes. The decor is okay, wasn't anything spectacular, however when I walked in, no one rushed to greet me, I just gallantly walked over to the back where more people were. This walk to the back is longer than it should I think. Obviously they want to keep everyone in the same cluster around each other, and also near the kitchen and cashier. So anyways, would of at least been nice to have been greeted.
Food wise, I don't know whether this is common, but how come the dishes don't come with an order of Naan/Rice? I think it should. I know Bombay Bhel does, so how come not other places? However, I felt I liked their Naan the most, because it was large, and it was hot. They also have this free appetizer. I have no idea what it was, basically looked like smoe curled-fried tortilla rolled like an egg-roll. However, this small thing was spicy man, I couldn't even finish it. I ordered this chicken dish, don't ask me what's in it, was $12.50 or something. On top of that the Naan was another $2.25. So I guess I kinda of expected the price to be around there, would of liked it to be lower, however, whatever. I found my dish to be pretty good, I enjoyed the flavour. My friend Vivian ordered some Tandoori Chicken dish that was dry, so it was on a skillet, with no sauce. That chicken was pretty juicy too, so I liked that.
We ended up talking for a long time, and it was good not being disturbed or pushed out. The waiter although somewhat unattentive but was nice, and always helpful.
So here is what I think, I think this restaurant is pretty good, and rates well up there with the rest. However, I also don't think this restaurant will last. Mind you I went on a thursday night, when probably they don't make much business in the first place. However based on the location, and the size, I'm not so sure it'll last. I think if the size of the restaurant was halved, it can survive longer.
One thing I did not like was we sat near the kitchen. And because it used to be some steakhouse, they have this open window stove. So you can basically see the chefs cooking. when we were served our food, we caught the chefs laughing at us. We have no idea why, and that kind of disturbs me.
In any case, service was adequate, food was decent. Environment was below average. Prices were just ever so bit below average. Total score, I'd give it a 3.0/5
